Tonight, I'll see my first movie of 2018 and reunite with my favorite snack: buttery popcorn. In honor of that upcoming date night, here are my top flicks of 2017.
5. Baywatch
Many of you won't understand this choice. This movie isn't very good, after all.
But I saw it on my birthday, and Mike laughed loud enough to fill the entire theater with his joy. It earns this spot because of all the great memories I associate with it. Oh, and the Rock was awesome, too!
4. The Big Sick
This movie is great for a number of reasons, like Ray Romano, the stand-up comedy sets, medical drama and the incredible screenplay, which is based on real life. But what I loved most is its depiction of the religious challenges experienced by many first-generation Americans.
Uggh, that sounds boring. But this movie is wise and charming! Please watch it on Amazon Prime while you have the chance.
3. John Wick Chapter 2
I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE. This movie is violent and absurd, which is a surprisingly satisfying combination in my book. I want Chapter 3 in my life ASAP.
Also, hubba hubba, Keanu Reeves.
2. Lady Bird
I'm thankful for this quiet, beautiful coming-of-age tale. I loved the script, soundtrack and performances by the two main characters.
Take yourself on a solo date to see it and shed a few tears over your own angsty teenage days. I can't wait to see this one again, and I hope it gets lots of awards!
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I resent myself for this choice, but it had to be done. No 2017 film gave me as many warm fuzzies as this one.
I may actually shell out more money to see it a second time in theaters, which is huge for me. Come for the epic space battles, stay for the adorable creatures.
The movie I hated most: Home Again
How could you do that to me, Reese Witherspoon? I had so much faith in your ability to make any film enjoyable. I was so, so wrong.
Mike and I walked out after about 20 squirm-inducing, flirtatious exchanges between actors who had no business being interested in one another. Save yourself!
P.S. I forgot to say that I saw 19 movies in theaters in 2017.
